African Sanctus
Blackstone-Ipswich Cambrian Choir
5th November 2022
Cambrian Centre, Booval

I was asked in early 2022 to mix David Fanshawe's African Sanctus by choir conductor David Webster, to which I quickly accepted and then proceeded to begin work on planning the stage layout and on the sound design. Achieving a balanced mix between the band and choir was going to be a challenge in such a small space; however, the concert was a great success.

Ensuring everything was carefully planned but still allowing for sudden changes was a challenge, especially when deciding on mic choice for the percussion section. Not knowing how the percussion instrumentation was being broken up or covered elsewhere forced my planning to be a bit more generic for that section. When the band members arrived for their first rehearsal in the venue, they were all professional and wonderful to work with, allowing me to make them sound as good as they possibly could a lot easier to accomplish.

This was definitely my most complex show to date with both the lighting and sound systems cueing each other on certain cues. Movement Seven (Crucifixus) was particularly complex with many OSC triggers timed to the rolling thunder throughout the recorded tracks.
